Key Terms

  1. Dextromethorphan (DXM or DM) is a cough suppressant drug found in many over-the-counter cold and cough medicines. When taken at doses higher than are medically recommended, dextromethorphan acts as a hallucinogenic drug.
  2. Diphenhydramine hydrochloride is a potent antihistamine agent. This leads to profound drowsiness as a very common side-effect, along with the possibilities of motor impairment, dry mouth and throat, flushed skin, rapid or irregular heartbeat, blurred vision at near point, abnormal sensitivity to bright light, pupil dilation, urinary retention, constipation, difficulty concentrating, short-term memory loss, visual disturbances, hallucinations, irritability, itchy skin, confusion, erectile dysfunction, and delirium. Some side effects such as twitching may be delayed until the drowsiness begins to cease and the person is in more of an awakening mode.
  3. Codeine or methylmorphine is an alkaloid found in opium.
  4. Psilocybin is a psychedelic indole of the tryptamine family, found in psilocybin mushrooms.
  5. Peyote is a cactus that contains mescaline.

  7. Vicodin is a trademarked brand of painkillers containing hydrocodone and paracetamol
  8. MDMA, most commonly known today by the street name Ecstasy, has more consistent emotional effects than most psychedelics and has a euphoria that appears to be different from most stimulants.
  9. Euphoria is a medically recognized emotional state related to pleasure and happiness.
  10. Amotivational syndrome A constellation of features said to be associated with substance use, including apathy, loss of effectiveness, diminished capacity to carryout complex or long-term plans, low tolerance for frustration, impaired concentration, and difficulty in following routines.
